Navigating Ireland’s energy-grant landscape can feel overwhelming. With so many different programmes available, it’s often difficult for businesses to know where to begin. To make things clearer, here’s a guide to the most relevant funding supports and how they can help your organisation cut energy costs, improve efficiency, and invest in clean technologies.
SEAI: Business Energy Supports
For most companies, the best starting point is an energy audit. Under the Support Scheme for Energy Audits (SSEA), SMEs can apply for a €2,000 voucher that, in most cases, covers the full cost of a professional audit (SEAI). The audit highlights where your business is wasting energy and points to the upgrades that will deliver the strongest return. Applications are straightforward, and eligible firms usually receive an automatic Letter of Offer once they meet the basic criteria.
Another major support is the Non-Domestic Solar PV Grant. This scheme provides between €2,700 and €162,600 depending on the size of the system, covering everything from small 7 kWp arrays to large 1 MW rooftop installations. Grants are paid upfront and all work must be carried out by SEAI-registered contractors, helping businesses, schools, farms and community buildings reduce energy costs from day one.
SEAI also funds Building Management System (BMS) upgrades, with grants of up to €30,000 depending on the complexity of the system (SEAI). A modern BMS uses sensors and smart controls to optimise heating, cooling, lighting and water consumption. The result is a more comfortable workplace, consistent temperatures and detailed energy data to guide future savings.
Local Enterprise Office (LEO) Supports
Micro and small businesses (1–50 employees) can benefit from the Energy Efficiency Grant, available through Local Enterprise Offices. This covers 75% of eligible costs, from €750 to €10,000, for improvements identified in a Green Start report, Green for Business report or SEAI audit. To qualify, your business must be trading for at least six months and based within your local authority area. For smaller firms in particular, this support can make efficiency upgrades affordable.
Enterprise Ireland: Green Transition Fund
For companies seeking to go further, Enterprise Ireland has created the Green Transition Fund, which offers support at every stage of the journey.
The Climate Action Voucher provides €1,800 to develop an initial sustainability or decarbonisation plan with an external expert.
GreenStart covers up to 80% of costs (capped at €5,000) for introducing best-practice environmental systems.
GreenPlus helps firms build advanced environmental management capacity, funding up to 50% of costs (capped at €50,000).
Grants are also available for energy monitoring systems (up to €50,000) and for large-scale decarbonisation projects (up to €1 million).
In addition, Enterprise Ireland supports Strategic Consultancy projects (up to €35,000) and EXEED grants of up to €3 million for energy-efficient design in industrial processes.
Choosing the Right Grant
With so many overlapping schemes, the challenge is knowing which supports are best for your business. An SEAI audit is often the first step, giving you a clear roadmap for savings and helping you meet eligibility requirements for other programmes. From there, the right mix of SEAI, LEO and Enterprise Ireland funding can significantly reduce costs while accelerating your sustainability goals.
At Energy Matters Ireland, we guide businesses through the process from start to finish identifying eligible schemes, estimating savings, managing applications, and connecting you with SEAI-approved contractors. Our aim is to make sure you secure the maximum funding while delivering projects that perform.
